I am delighted to have just received a (very) small allocation of the amazing Rieslings from JJ Prum. In the off-dry to sweet style these are pinnacles of the genre, impeccably balanced, powerful and capable of lengthy cellaring. Included in the offer are some museum releases from 2003 and 2009 direct from the JJ Prum cellars as well as two Goldkapsel (explained below) wines from the phenomenal 2013 vintage.
The number of bottles as well the offer price are indicated in red. If you would like order, please email me – email@example.com or phone on 0449 808 371.
2009 Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett – 5 btls Retail price $64/ Offer$55
This is the vineyard that is most often contrasted with the Wehlener Sonnenuhr when you visit J.J. Prüm. The Graacher, which has slightly deeper soil, is often more open as a young wine but is also more mineral. The stunning 2009 is wonderfully energetic and vibrant with terrific purity and focus. It offers delicious red apple, grapefruit, indian spice and floral aromatics and a whisper fine palate. 9% alc/vol. and totally in the zone.
“Sinewy and lithe, with tightly packed flavors of peach, apricot and mango, which are accented by minerally, herbal notes. The racy finish packs plenty of punch. Drink now through 2024.” 91 points, Kim Marcus, winespectator.com, April 30, 2011
2003 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese 2 btls Retail price $102/ Offer$86
Open, layered, and absolutely vibrant. Fresh and alive with peach nectar and anise fruit as well as some lovely savoury, inky, rocky notes on the finish. Lovely sweetness and generosity. Also some hints of development, yet overall very youthful.
“The bouquet blossoms in a floral way that seems typical for the 2003 vintage here, as is this wine’s imposingly creamy texture. Elegance, lift, clarity, refinement and florality characterize the flavors throughout. In another reflection of the vintage, the essential fruit here is quince rather than apple, tinged with bittersweet vanilla and flowers and a subtle hint of white raisin. Ethereal fruit, flowers and wet stone really cling in the finish.” David Schildknecht, Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar, Jan 2005 (note predates this publication’s 100-point scoring system)
Auslese Goldkapsel (Gold capsule)
Katharina Prüm explains the Goldkapsel wines in this way: “Think of them as limited edition, rather small production lots of the best Auslese of a vintage. They are made from stronger selected grapes containing higher concentrated juice, usually affected by a certain amount of botrytis/noble rot, capable of aging even remarkably longer than “basic” Auslesen, lasting for many decades. In the course of time, they lose some of their sweetness, gain more and more elegance and harmony and the complex profile and depth come to the forefront.” These extraordinary wines live and evolve for many decades. They can certainly work with appropriately matched desserts (ideally fruit based) but are even better with savoury dishes and cheeses. You can throw anything at them, red meat included. They are far more versatile than most dry whites and certainly more than all red wine styles. These are, as the name clearly suggests, designated by a golden capsule. They are some of the most revered Rieslings on the planet.
2013 Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Auslese Goldkapsel 2 btls Retail price $212/ Offer $180
It’s patently silly, when you have a wine this pretty and refined, to talk of black holes, of abysses that you might fall into, of Alice and her rabbit hole. Nonetheless, this is certainly a wine that you can lose yourself in. It is so deep, long and never ending. On the one hand it is incredibly dense and powerful, with masses of extract – so tightly wound that you are only seeing a fraction of the wine’s personality. On the other, the balance and finesse of the wine are a wonder to behold and the spicy, mixed peel, grapefruit essence complexity makes for a highly seductive personality in the mouth. When words fail…
“The pale-colored 2013 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese Gold Capsule displays a stunning pure and precise, stony-flavored bouquet with fresh white and green fruit aromas. Very clear, elegant and strikingly piquant on the palate, this is a noble sweet wine with a highly precise fruit expression and a very mineral and still stringent finish. Bottled with 7.5% of alcohol this is an extremely fine, tightly woven and lovely salty Auslese that seriously rivals the auctioned Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese this year.” 96 points, Stephan Reinhardt, eRobertParker.com #217, Feb 2015
2013 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese Goldkapsel 2 btls Retail price $236/ Offer $200
This is more of the same, but now with a core of oozing stone fruits (in particular apricot). This is the bottled essence of Wehlener and a wine for the ages. It will be decades before this peaks, but for now it is a gloriously textured thing of beauty that perfumes the breath for minutes after swallowing.
“Fine almond and herbal aromas intertwined with stony and fine Riesling raisin aromas to open the noble sweet 2013 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Gold Capsule. Concentrated, sweet and highly elegant in texture, everything is perfectly interwoven here: sweetness, minerals, acidity and fruit. The finish is juicy, salty and extremely noble and the alcohol volume of 8% will lend this wine a lovely drink window of 20+ years.” 97+ points, Stephan Reinhardt, eRobertParker.com #217, Feb 2015
